Tale of Janghwa and Hongryeon
~A Tragedy of the Sisters~
Janghwa and Hongryeon, blessed with beauty and talent, grew up showered with their parents' love. However, their mother soon passed away due to illness, and Bae Muryong remarried a woman named Heo.
Despite her unpleasant appearance and personality, Heo bore three sons. From the time her first son was born, she began to abuse Janghwa and Hongryeon, the daughters from the previous marriage.
As time passed and Janghwa's engagement was confirmed, Bae Muryong instructed Heo to prepare a lavish dowry. Reluctant to part with her wealth, Heo plotted to kill Janghwa.
Framed for a false crime by Heo and her son Jangswe, Janghwa, unable to endure the torment, threw herself into a pond and died.
On his way back after witnessing Janghwa's death, Jangswe was attacked by a tiger that tore off his ears, an arm, and a leg. With Jangswe gravely injured, Heo's hatred for Hongryeon intensified.
Hongryeon was tormented by Jangswe's revelation of Janghwa's death, leading her to follow her sister into the pond in despair.
The souls of the sisters, unable to find peace, sought out the newly appointed mayor of Cheolsan to clear their names. However, the mayor, shocked by the sight of their ghosts, died, as did his successor.
Eventually, a man named Jeong Dongu volunteered as the mayor. He listened to the sisters' story and reinvestigated the case, uncovering the truth of Heo and her son's scheme.
Jeong Dongu punished Heo severely and respectfully laid Janghwa and Hongryeon to rest. Later, Bae Muryong remarried a woman named Yoon, with whom he had twin daughters, and they lived happily ever after.
❖ The Second Tale ❖
Tale of Seodong
~Love Connected with a Song~
Seodong made a living by selling yams and learned that
Princess Seonhwa, the third daughter of King Jinpyeong of Silla, was beautiful.
He traveled to the capital, giving yams to children
and teaching them a song he composed, the "Song of Seodong"
The song, which suggested "Princess Seonhwa is dating Seodong" became popular in the capital. Upon hearing it, the king, enraged, exiled Princess Seonhwa to a distant place.
On her journey, Seodong appeared before Princess Seonhwa, offering to escort her. Though she didn't know who he was, she gradually developed affection for him. It was much later that she discovered he was the one who spread the song.
Having decided to live with Seodong, Princess Seonhwa offered him a gold bar her mother had given her, suggesting they live off it.
However, Seodong laughed heartily, asking, "What is this?"
When the princess explained it was gold, valuable enough to live well for hundreds of years, Seodong replied, "The land where I dug yams as a child was piled high with such things".
Surprised, Princess Seonhwa suggested sending the gold back to her parents at the palace.
Seodong agreed, and they asked a renowned monk of Yonghwa Mountain to use his mysterious power to move the gold to the palace.
With the monk's mystical abilities, the gold, along with a letter from Princess Seonhwa, was transported overnight to the king's palace. Captivating King Jinpyeong's heart, Seodong eventually ascended to the throne of Baekje.
❖ The Third Tale ❖
The Tale of Jigwi (in the Tale of Seodong)
~Flames of Love Turned Literal~
One day, he went to the capital
and happened to see Queen Seondeok passing by.
Captivated by her beauty at first sight, Jigwi fell into unrequited love,
which gradually took a toll on his health.
One day, when the queen went to a temple to pray,
rumors spread that Jigwi had fallen ill from longing for her.
Queen Seondeok instructed her servant to tell Jigwi to wait in front of the temple.
While the queen offered her prayers inside, Jigwi waited outside. Exhausted from waiting, he eventually fell asleep
After finishing her prayers, the queen saw the sleeping Jigwi,
removed her gold bracelet, placed it in his arms, and left.
When Jigwi awoke and found the bracelet, he was overjoyed
but also furious with himself for having fallen asleep.
Receiving the bracelet only deepened his love for the queen,
and soon his body was consumed by flames.
As a result, he was completely engulfed and transformed into a fire spirit.
As the fiery Jigwi roamed the world, people became terrified.
Seeing this, Queen Seondeok taught the people a spell
and instructed them to write it on their doorposts.
After that, Jigwi was no longer visible to them.
